Oral/Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are dental specialists who treat a wide range of problems of the mouth, teeth, jaws and face. They are experts in the treatment of such conditions as problem wisdom teeth, facial pain, and misaligned jaws.

Your general dentist may refer you to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for surgical removal of wisdom teeth or placement of dental implants. For more information on dental implants, click here. In addition to these more common procedures, they are able to treat a wide range of complicated conditions, defects, injuries, and oral diseases.

Certification in this field requires completion of a minimum four-year hospital surgical residency program after training in general dentistry.
